St John’s C. E. Primary School

St. John’s C.E. Primary School is an “Aided School” one of the family of schools under the auspices of Manchester Diocese. St. John’s is the smallest school in Rochdale Education Authority, serving in general the local community, although a minority of children do travel across the borough to attend the school.

The school is situated in rural surroundings, close to the Oldham boundary, ½ mile up an unadopted country lane; and close to St. John the Evangelist Church Thornham.

In 2004 the threatened closure of the school was successfully fought by parents, pupils (past and present), the Church family and the wider community. This is when the school changed status from a “Controlled School” to a “Voluntary Aided” School.

In July 2008 the Bishop of Middleton, The Right Rev Mark Davies, dedicated the new school hall which has greatly enhanced the provision for the pupils and the wider community.

The school topped the Rochdale league table in November 2009 with 100% success at key stage 2.

The School and the Church share strong links with regular school services being held in the Church, along side work by the children being displayed at Church. The church community also attend services and events held in school.

If you are interested in your child attending St. John’s school please contact the school directly.

The Church Pastoral Link Officer is Revd. Peter Demain.
